Shooting at Howe Park Injures 4 People Shot in the Arden-Arcade Section of Sacramento County

Officials in Sacramento County are looking into a violent incident that unfolded Saturday night April 18 at Howe Park in Sacramento just as deputies were dispersing an unsanctioned gathering of several hundred people.

Background

Officers from the Sacramento County Sheriff's Office were first dispatched to Howe Park at about half past six in the evening after receiving reports of subjects reportedly carrying hidden weapons. After that, another report was received regarding an alleged brawl breaking out within the park grounds.

A law enforcement helicopter conducted an aerial sweep but could not confirm any ongoing fight. Even so, authorities discovered that an enormous crowd had gathered without authorization in an unauthorized manner.

The Dispersal and Shooting

Officers worked to disperse the crowd by encircling the gathering and issuing commands over loudspeakers commanding the hundreds present to disperse at once. Nearly 15 minutes were provided for attendees to disperse.

Four Gunshot Victims

When the dust settled, four victims were confirmed as gunshot victims. Those injured — consisting of one woman and three men all reportedly in their twenties — were airlifted or driven to local Sacramento hospitals. Emergency physicians reported that two had critical injury classifications, one victim's injuries were classified as moderate, and one sustained minor gunshot wounds. As of last report, no fatalities were reported and all four were stable.

The Sacramento Metropolitan Fire Department provided support and helped care for the injured before they were taken to the hospital.

Crime Scene Evidence

The bulk of the shooting was determined to have been concentrated on the Cottage Way corridor adjacent to the Home Depot situated at the 2200 block of Howe Avenue. Law enforcement investigators located additional spent rounds scattered along Cottage Way. Projectile impacts were discovered in the metal fencing adjacent to the Home Depot store. This ballistic evidence showed that at least one of the shooters had been discharging rounds toward the south from Cottage Way in the direction of the Home Depot store. The store itself was put under lockdown while law enforcement worked the area. Forensic investigators and law enforcement detectives kept processing evidence for hours.

Suspects Detained

Information relayed via scanner audio showed that a vehicle identified as a Kia was pulled over in the Solano County area. Four suspects were taken into custody. Sacramento County Sheriff's deputies were en route to collect those detained to transport the detainees for formal questioning. Video evidence showed that two separate shooters participated in the incident.
